Sacred Grounds Coffeehouse and Deli has quietly transformed under new ownership into a local iconic eatery that reflects the spirit of the locale, serving fast and friendly fare in a rustic yet welcoming atmosphere and brewing up its own brand of hot local coffee.

When you walk into the Sacred Grounds Coffeehouse & Deli, you walk into the “home” of Sally Rue. The mountain funk décor combined with the warmth of colors and the delicious aromas of cinnamon rolls and freshly brewed coffee reflect the spirit of its owner. You may enter as a customer, but you will leave as a life-long friend.

This sassy lady with her infectious laugh is no stranger to customer care and the food & beverage industry. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Sally moved to Grand Junction, Colorado where she raised her six children while working in and managing restaurants. In 1985, with the economic slump, Sally moved to Denver where job opportunities were more plentiful. However, Sally yearned to return to the Western Slope which she considers home. After 45 years in the industry and 14 grandchildren later, a perfect opportunity presented itself and Sally achieved a lifelong goal when she took over the proprietorship of this long-time iconic eatery, Sacred Grounds, in March 2011.

The new catering service, which has been growing in popularity with its free local delivery, is what the deli really needed. “I am really excited about this, and I know our customers appreciate it,” says Sally. “I want everyone to know they can call us a day or two in advance and order their favorites menu items for the next big event. The hard-working locals want breakfast and lunch for business meetings, or they want to grab a complete breakfast or lunch, including beverage and dessert before they have to rush back to the office. The tourists and local adventure companies can order our souvenir backpack meals to take with them on their next outdoor adventure, whether it be skiing, hiking, or fishing. We make it fresh and fast, and of course with big smile of appreciation for their business!”

“Even though we are going through a lot of changes, we still have not changed those items on the menu that remain the favorites of our loyal customers. We still serve our fresh fruit smoothies, ice cream, and shakes. We still have our local bulletin board and our supply of daily local newspapers. But when our customers come in and order, they're not just a number. They're a celebrity. I mean that literally. They are called to pick up their order with a celebrity name, such as John Elway, Sting or Michelle Pfeiffer. This never fails to lighten up the atmosphere and put a smile on everyone's face. I love it,” says Tom.

Building on the foundation of good works of the previous owner, Sally added her changes and touches making it her own. She added menu options including homemade pork green chili, homemade pastries, soups, and more. Her cinnamon rolls and breakfast burritos are local favorites, along with her True Brew Coffee. You will find a larger selection of Barista-prepared options in addition to fresh fruit smoothies, ice cream and shakes. And don’t miss her “special blend diet water”. Sally added a Wi-Fi Bar where you can sit and relax or you can order a delightful box lunch to go.

Sally sees each customer as a valued friend who she wants to see again. When you order from Sally, you have her full attention and care. Sally’s friendship extends to her fellow-business-owners. She deeply believes in the importance of promoting local businesses and thus the local economy. She strives to feature local vendors such as Rifle’s True Brew Coffee, Basalt’s Born to Bake Bagels and Aspen’s Louis Swiss Pastry’s specialty breads. But boosting the local economy doesn’t stop there for Sally, she and her French Bulldog Jaeger (as in Mick) do a snow dance every evening to entice early and heavy snows to our resort towns.

Sally doesn’t see retirement in her future because she loves what she does and has too much “pep in her step” to sit on her behind. Settled in with her bulldog, 2 Labs, and her Cocker Spaniel, she plans to be here a long time. And as Sally points out, all she needs to have a great day every day is to see a smile on the face of one of her grandchildren.
